June 13 1938, Morris and Essex Dog Show, USA
The above photograph appeared in LIFE magazine's June 13, 1938 issue when they covered the large Morris and Essex Dog Show. At time of posting we do not know the name of the Afghan Hound (suspect it's a Prides Hill Afghan), but we will find out and update this page accordingly
LIFE Magazine words under the above photograph - "Upon such upstarts as the half century old Airedale, this baboon-faced dog looks down its long nose thrugh 50 centuries of recorded history. Just such a dog as this was carved on Egyptian tombs and described in papyries documents of 5,000 years ago. Originating near Mount Sinai, the Afghan Hound got its name in Afghhanistan where it became a mighty hunter. Breders accentuated its high-held tail since the huntsman must watch the tail to mark its passage through Afghan thickets. High, wide hips make it the worlds fastest dog over hills and hurdles. Popularized by British Officers after the War, it is now regarded as best hound for hunting leopards, coursing gazelles and jack rabbits"
